There are several processes and companies specialising in each of them involved in the production of a single piece of fabric. These include materials, spinning, knitting, dyeing, processing and finishing. ...... In between these processes, further specialised companies such as yarn twisting and raising are sometimes involved. Knitters in Wakayama create fabrics of many different kinds by combining techniques from a network spread out like a spider's web. The theme of this year's exhibition is ‘Tag Sweatshirts’. Once again, ten circular knitting and dyeing factories in Wakayama have teamed up with respected professionals to put their ideas and craftsmanship into a single sweatshirt.

MIWA TEXTILE INDUSTRY × TOYOTA SHIGYO (Osaka) / Twisting the way and playing with fire

Yarns of different yarn counts, wall twisting, gas firing, etc., are carefully knitted to perfection.

Miwa Textile Industry is a popular knitter in the past Wakayama Daibakusyo with its beautiful, degree-padded eyelets. This time, Miwa Textile chose Osaka-based Toyota Shigyo as its tag-team partner. Toyota Shigyo is a yarn processing company specialising in twisted yarn and Gas Singeing. This time, an unprecedented sweatshirt was developed by using Gas Singeing twisted yarn, which fully utilises Toyota Shigyo's technology, in an orthodox 18-gauge yarn-lined sweatshirt.

The outer yarn is made from three fine (No. 80) twisted yarn of rare pima cotton. The three-ply twisting increases the strength of the yarn and gives it a beautifully aligned surface.

The three twisted strands are then gas burnt. Gas Singeing is a technique in which the yarn is passed through a burner to burn off the surface fluff, and at Toyota Shigyo the fluff is removed evenly by applying the flame from all 360° directions. The fine three-count yarn is further beautifully finished to produce a shining, wooden-grey outer fabric.
